Gmail and iPhone alums create Electric Imp, connect your toaster to the web

Have you ever wanted to preheat your oven while on the way home from work, or start your sprinklers while vacationing, only to remember you don’t have the spare loot lying around for a network of smart appliances? A recent startup (that somehow eluded Kickstarter) called Electric Imp is about to make your wireless control / monitoring fantasies a reality with its soon-to-be-released, $25 web interface. It works much like an Eye-Fi card, and communicates with cloud services as well as other connected devices like your Android or iPhone via WiFi. The company is working hard to get the slots that work with the cards into many of the machines that we usually don’t link up to the good ol’ www — but have often wanted to — and it hopes to have everything in place later this year. This all sounds like a great deal right now, but just wait until your washing machine gets hacked and starts using scalding water on all your darks and delicates. More info at the source.

Structured Settlement F.A.Q. ? part 2

without comments

How do I know if I need to sell my structured settlement?

If you are facing an unexpected financial crisis and have no other choice to raise the cash you need to avert losing your home, paying medical bills or any other emergency, selling your structured settlement is a right option.

How does the marketplace work?

As an auction, different companies will bid on your note, lottery payment, annuity or structured settlement. You will earn the most cash possible. You don?t have the ?headache? of being called by many companies, and it saves you money. It?s also good for the buyer. They can go to one place and see many listings of annuities or structured settlements for sale. All the information they need to make a bid is there.

How can I be sure a structured settlement buying company is the right one for me?

A reputable company will have a Better Business Bureau record with satisfied clients. See if there are any complaints about a company on a Google search.

Will all companies give me the same amount?

No, absolutely! Few companies will give a very low quote to maximize their profit. Always get quotes from several places and don?t disclose the quotes from other companies. In this way, it will be clear which company is trying to help you and which one is looking out for itself. The more companies that know you are selling a structured settlement, the better price you will earn.

How do I know what the price should be?

There are calculators available that can get you an estimate of the value of your structured settlement or annuity.

How long will it take to earn my money?

A reputable company will guarantee you a closing date. If they mention an interest drag to delay the closing, you may find another company. Expect closing in 8 to 12 weeks.

What if it takes longer than 8 to 12 weeks?

In the closing guarantee you should add that any delays will award the per diem sum be paid to you at the time of closing. If they accept it will prove that the company is not delaying your case to make a profit.

Is there any government protection for the seller?

Most states have the Model State Structured Settlement Protection Act or something similar. This protection act requires a full disclosure of all the terms of the sale. This includes the discount rate, number of payments and any charges for breach of the agreement. You should insist that the buyer complies with the Act. Sometimes it may be required to have independent financial or legal advice.

(AP) ? Greece is headed for another month of political paralysis ahead of new elections in mid-June, after party leaders on Tuesday failed to reach an agreement to build a coalition government.

The protracted deadlock and the prospect of an anti-austerity party winning the new vote hammered Europe’s markets on fears that the debt-crippled country could be forced out of the European single currency, triggering shockwaves throughout the 17-country eurozone.

“The country is unfortunately heading again to elections,” Socialist party leader and former finance minister Evangelos Venizelos said after the talks under President Karolos Papoulias collapsed. “It is heading back to elections in a few days under very bad circumstances, because certain people coldly put their short-term party interests above the national interest.”

Main European markets lost earlier gains, with the FTSE 100 index of leading shares shedding 0.6 percent, Germany’s DAX down 1 percent and the CAC-40 in France 0.7 percent. Greek shares were clobbered further after days of heavy losses, with the Athens stock market initially diving 4.86 percent, to close 3.6 percent down.

The euro also fell, trading 0.3 percent lower at $1.2794.

Tuesday’s meeting of five party leaders under Papoulias was a last-ditch effort to overcome the deadlock after a first election in May left no party with enough votes for a majority in parliament. Repeated attempts over nine days to cobble together a coalition government proved fruitless, as anti-austerity parties riding on a tide of popular discontent at protracted cutbacks failed to co-operate with mainstream pro-European politicians.

The political uncertainty has worried Greece’s international creditors, who have extended the country billions of euros in rescue loans over the past two years. The election campaign was dominated by the debate over Greek’s dismal financial state and the strict austerity measures taken in return for the bailout.

Third-placed PASOK’s Venizelos said the head of the small Democratic Left party, Fotis Kouvelis, had proposed forming a two-year government, but insisted that it include the radical far-left Syriza party.

Syriza came a surprise second in the May 6 vote, campaigning strongly on an anti-bailout platform and calling for austerity measures to be cancelled. The party’s leader, Alexis Tsipras, has refused to join any government that will not repeal the measures.

“We tried to create a government that would satisfy the minimum demands made by the electorate,” Tsipras said after Tuesday’s talks. “Our main demand was to cancel the new harsh measures cutting pensions and salaries and to restore labor rights.”

The conservative New Democracy party won the election, but only received 18.9 percent of the vote as angry voters scattered to smaller parties.

Papoulias will now convene a new meeting of party leaders on Wednesday to appoint a caretaker government to manage the country until the election.

Opinion polls show Syriza is likeliest to come first in the new vote, but again without enough seats in parliament to govern alone. However, as first party, Syriza would enjoy an automatic 50-seat bonus and could hope to form a coalition with the help of other left and right-wing anti-austerity parties.

“These upcoming elections will be a struggle between the left-leaning forces of nihilism in league with opportunistic populists,” New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras said. “On the other side will be a European front, strong and determined.”

Many Greeks seem resigned to the need for new polls, even though that will hold back the country’s commitments to detail new harsh cutbacks next month while implementing pledged reforms.

“The solution is provided by democracy and democratic procedures,” said Athens resident Yannis Ekaterinaris.

Another Athenian, Kostas Zaris, dismissed the idea floated by Papoulias for party leaders to agree on a cabinet of unelected technocrats.

“With a technocrat nothing can ever change,” he said. “Technocrats only care about their interests and they cannot represent 50 percent or so of the Greek people.”

Analyst Dimitris Mardas strongly disagreed, saying politicians should have done their utmost to strike a deal.

“As far as the economy is concerned, this is the worst thing that could have happened,” he said. “It would have been preferable to have a government of technocrats that of course would have been allowed to actually govern.”

Mardas, an associate professor of economics at Thessaloniki University, said the timing of the vote for mid-June could also harm Greece’s key tourism industry.

“It’s just what we didn’t need,” he said.

New growth figures released Tuesday revealed the extent of Greece’s ongoing crisis.

The country’s economy contracted by 6.2 percent in the first quarter of 2012, compared with the first three months of 2011, according to the Greek Statistical Authority. Greece is now in its fifth year of recession, while unemployment is at a record high of nearly 22 percent.

My So-Called Chaos: Bingo, Pets, and Books!

without comments

I had a great weekend again. ?Friday night was Bingo with the Utah Cyber Sluts in support of Cause for Paws Utah (the rescue I volunteer for) and it could not have been more fun! Plus we got to sit with CFPU as part of the elite! It was fun!
I got to walk Keyni around during the break at Bingo, and lots of people thought he was just the cutest. ?Why hasn’t he found a home yet? ?I have no idea!
Then Josh and Julie went out to the bars, and I went home to meet Brian and Pookie back at my place for more drinking! It was fun!
Saturday Josh and I ran some fun errands and the bunny decided it was ok to come upstairs to say hi to the camera and get treats.
Then I went to spend the night at Kristina’s. ?Saturday morning I made waffles and the kiddos loved it!
Their mamma wanted to give them a Mother’s Day treat too. ?So they got giant jawbreaker suckers. ?Just look at this kid! Then we had a nice BBQ and sat by the camp fire outside while we ate it. ?Followed by ice cream. Then last night I went over to my grandma’s to have dinner with her and bring my kitty more food. I couldn’t resist but get her a little mouse with catnip in it either. ?She LOVED it! She was playing with it a lot.
And just because they’re cute, here are some of my gran’s cute little pets. I’m happy for all of my awesome friends, my honorary nieces and nephews, and these little furry faces that bring such light into my life! :)

Other things I’m happy for:

  • I fixed my suede moccasins after I stepped in giant puddles with them.
  • I started reading Dead?Reckoning?last night. ?This is only my second book for May, so I’d better get cracking!
  • I got my very own causeforpawsutah.org email now! I’m officially one of the crew!
  • Friday night I get to see a real Burlesque show, and all the proceeds go to support CFPU!
  • I’m writing kick-A emails for the email subscription list for CFPU. ?You should subscribe by email, we give away awesome prizes to random subscribers!
  • Lots of goodies were donated to the auction to help Charlie, including a few things from my Etsy shop. ?You should go Bid on them and help a great cause too!
  • I’m going to Orientation tonight so that I can volunteer at the adoption center in Trolley Square every wednesday night. ?So awesome.

What makes you happy this week?

How To Raise A $1M Seed Round

without comments

moneyWhen I talk to my friends who are not currently at startups, or the Silicon Valley, the perception is that VCs and individual investors are throwing around investment dollars like drunken sailors. Outsiders think that there is a bubble, and that any company with two engineers and an idea will get funded (though there is some truth to that in certain cases). The reality is, competition has never been fiercer for startups, especially at the seed stage, to close a round. The pendulum may have swung for Y Combinator companies, but not everyone else.

Falcone?s LightSquared files for bankruptcy

Falcone, CEO and chief investment officer for Harbinger Capital Partners, participates in a panel discussion during the Skybridge Alternatives Conference in Las Vegas(Reuters) ? Hedge fund manager Philip Falcone?s dream of bringing another wireless network to the United States likely came to an end on Monday, when LightSquared Inc, the ailing telecommunications company he bankrolled, filed for bankruptcy protection. LightSquared and many affiliates, as widely expected, filed for protection from creditors with the U.S. bankruptcy court in Manhattan. Falcone, once one of the hedge fund industry?s most powerful figures, and LightSquared?s creditors failed to reach an agreement. ?

Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary was the place to be for Triangle folk to attend the Band Together concert benefiting Urban Ministries of Wake County. The B52?S headlined the event along with local opening acts Big Something and Southern Culture on the Skids. The stars of course, being the B52?s went through a medley of their greatest hits as the triangle crowd two stepped, head bobbed, and pointed finger danced their boogie on. Party Goers were strangely cheerful as they reminisced and sung? along to their favorites and not quite remembered.

University of California, Riverside runs entire building floor off of 1.1-megawatt green battery

University of California, Riverside runs entire building floor off of 1.1-megawatt green battery

We’re used to batteries powering a lot of devices, but the University of California, Riverside is upping that a notch by charging up a whole floor’s worth. The school’s Winston Chung Global Energy Center is walking the eco-friendly walk and has started using a huge bank of rare earth, lithium-ion batteries from Balqon to produce 1.1 megawatts, enough to keep Winston Chung Hall’s entire first floor humming along while tapping renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. The batteries bank their energy overnight, keeping the throngs of students happy without having to recharge as much or use the regular power grid as a fallback. While it’s considered a testbed, the university’s giant battery is considered a blueprint for cellular towers and the green power sources themselves — the combination of which could keep your smartphone up and running with a lot less of an environmental hit.
